PERSONAL
Billy Jim Nabours, Jr. Is a native Texan, born October 9, 1956 and is an older child with two brothers. He is the son of a 36-year veteran school teacher and grandson of a woman who also taught school for over 30 years throughout Central Texas. It was that type of environment that eventually influenced me to enter the public school system where I now have 20 years of service as a teacher, coach, athletic coordinator, and sponsor of various activities. I am currently employed in my 11th year with Comfort Independent School District at the high school as a Social Studies teacher, girls’ coach and girls’ coordinator.
My earliest memories of public schools in Texas actually began at age 5, before there was such a thing as pre-kindergarten or kindergarten. My grandmother taught English at Rogers High School in Bell County and I would often tag along with her while my mother was in the process of earning her own teaching degree from Mary Hardin-Baylor College. By the time I started first grade I was ready for school and was never disappointed until it came time to graduate 12 years later. School meant friends, family, knowledge, and great people – teachers ands coaches –to interact with.
Some of the most positive influences I can attest too came from Rogers Independent School District. I can still call several former teachers and coaches just to talk. They, along with my own mother and grandmother – both who taught me in school – instilled an educational philosophy that helps me be most effective years later.
I was not always involved in public education, however. Before embarking on a career in education I worked as a sports editor for 10 years upon graduating from Southwest Texas State University in 1979. After newspaper stops in Angleton, Taylor, Belton, Big Spring, Weatherford, and Kerrville, I married Lorna in May 1989 and then completed teacher certification at Schreiner College in Kerrville. At the urging of my principal at Weimar High School, I decided to finally go after one of my other educational goals and completed work on my Masters’ Degree in Education in 2000, including necessary hours towards mid-management certification.
Completion of earning a Masters in Ed. led to employment as assistant principal at Comfort High School for one year (2002-2003), but the classroom is where the most gratifying and satisfying moments happen, and per request I went back to full-time classroom and coaching duties beginning in the fall of 2003,. Administration duties in the form of girls’ coordinator were added in 2005.
Philosophy of Education
In the public school system of Texas, all eyes are on faculty, administrators, and students and the way we conduct our business at hand ---- establishing and maintaining the school environment, both academically and otherwise. The public’s attitude and opinion of us ---- the school ---- and our handling of that attitude in a positive/productive manner is necessary for the success of the school. If we display a positive philosophy, that is how we will perceived and received ---- positive. So, we must convey a positive attitude and a positive influence in all that we do as a school. By instilling a sense of pride and ownership of the school by both students and staff, the public will see the school system and its people as having respect for others, performing with integrity, keeping priorities in the appropriate order, possessing leadership skills and performing with efficiency in and out of the school.
